VELT - the federation for ecological living and producing - launched the 'GMO-free communities campaign in Belgium in 2002. It has been urging all Flemish local governments to declare their territories GMO-free. So far 39 municipalities in the Flemish speaking part of Belgium (Vlaanderen) have declared themselves GMO free.
In the French speaking part of Belgium (Wallonie) 81 municipalities have declared themselves GMO-free led by Nature Progress Belgique.
